Top 3 Reasons To Build Your Website On Squarespace

Having started in 2006, Squarespace has improved by leaps and bounds to become the all-in-one website building juggernaut it is today. With an ever-growing community of designers, developers, and content creators, as well as the release of Fluid Engine during Summer 2022, it’s never been a better choice to start a website and grow a business.

As a studio working with early-stage start-ups and small businesses, we’ve leveraged Squarespace as a website solution for years. From its easy-to-use CMS and fluidly responsive design out of the box, it’s been an easy choice to make for clients who need an amazing website without the complexities that may come with WordPress or other CMS platforms. By cutting out the majority, if not all, of the coding, we’re able to focus solely on what matters most to us: the user experience and the overall design. And now, with the newer feature releases, we’re able to do that more effectively and efficiently than ever.

So with that, here are our top 3 reasons why you should build your company website on Squarespace.

Fluid Engine is Incredible. Period.

A year ago, designers and devs were used to what’s now called “The Classic Editor” which featured a library of customizable section layouts with content blocks. While this was great in that it allowed for quicker page building, the 12-column grid framework didn’t allow for much layout customization or easy resizing of elements; especially with trendier overlapping layouts that would require tweaking the z-index properties in CSS. This, along with other smaller issues, either required additional development help or potential design workarounds. (For more on this, read our article “What is Fluid Engine.”)

When Fluid Engine was released in August 2022, it took the Squarespace community by storm. Customizable grid structures based on CSS Grid frameworks, overlapping elements, and a more meticulous handling of the responsive design per device, were just a few of the key features introduced. Since then, numerous features have been added that make it even more possible to create a website on-par with a more bespoke design, such as Section Dividers, Shape Tool, and the Scrolling Text Blocks. Add this with the power of a CSS/Javascript plugin like SquareKicker, and you’ve got even more customization options in very little time.

The Community is Hugely Supportive

Designers, developers, content creators, small business owners—these are just a few types of people you’ll find within the Squarespace community. Between social platforms like Instagram and Youtube, as well as the Squarespace support forums, you’re bound to find new platform insights and updates, as well as answers to any Squarespace-related issue.

Developers like S-E Web Design and InsideTheSquare are some of our favorite content creators, while online stores like GhostPlugins offer plugins for various content block modifications and custom interactions. If you do run into any issues with your website, Squarespace offers 24/7 support.

Most of all, being part of the Squarespace community also allows you to gain access to new beta features to test out prior to public releases, and give valuable feedback to the product team.

An All-In-One Platform

Most people know Squarespace as a website builder, but it’s so much more than that now. Now, Squarespace is a centralized hub for all of your website and digital marketing efforts.

Within Squarespace’s product features, you have access to email marketing, built-in site analytics and SEO, appointment scheduling and CRM via Acuity Scheduling, restaurant guest reservations with Tock, and social link-in-bio customization via Unfold. Whether you’re on the go or at your desk, you can monitor your website’s progress and make edits via the Squarespace mobile app. Most of all, you can buy your domain or import your current domain to Squarespace’s hosting—ensuring that everything is in one spot.

Squarespace also supports a ton of third-party APIs; such as (but not limited to) Google Business, Freshbooks, Printful, and ShipStation. However you need your website to work, you can make it happen through any of these integrations.

When Should My Team Use Squarespace?

With website platforms getting more sophisticated with updates and features, there’s really no true “right or wrong” way to build your company website (assuming of course it has a CMS!). However, here are some scenarios in which Squarespace would be the best option:

  • The website needs to be built within a tight timeframe.

  • The overall objective of the website is to centralize marketing efforts with little to no development intervention.

  • The desire is for easier scalability and site design maintenance.

Final Thoughts

Squarespace has come a long way since being a simple website template builder. There’s a ton of potential to be had with using Squarespace as a platform, and new features are implemented on an almost quarterly basis. As a studio, we’re proud to continue offering it to our existing and new clientele for all of the reasons above (and more). So whether you’re just starting your new business or in the process of redesigning your start-up’s website, Squarespace is the platform for efficient, beautifully responsive design with everything you need to grow for the long-term.
